Project Description

To conclude my additional major in Human-Computer Interaction, I’ve spent the semester researching and designing an interactive playbook tool for our client, the Pittsburgh Steelers. I am working on a team of five students on this project. The project is broken up roughly into three parts being research, low-fidelity prototyping, and high fidelity prototyping. Currently, we are finishing up the low-fidelity prototyping stage and are transitioning into more polished prototypes.

Part One: Research

Below you’ll find the presentation we gave to the class at the conclusion of our research phase. We used the Carnegie Mellon football team and staff in addition to the Pittsburgh Steelers to conduct this research. The presentation summarizes our detailed user interview process and the insights we obtained.

Part Two: Low-Fidelity Prototyping

Below you’ll find the presentation we gave to the class at the conclusion about our low-fidelity prototyping process. The presentation summarizes our affinity diagramming, visioning sessions, low-fidelity prototypes, and early user testing with CMU football players. An additional round of low-fidelity prototypes was created after this presentation and tested with players from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Going Forward

Design wise so far we have focused on how specifically players would like to learn and in what way/order they’d like to learn it. To do so we have created prototype screens for a wide variety of different concepts using a multitude of interaction techniques. Our user testing helped us refine both the concepts and interaction techniques, which puts us in a great position for higher-fidelity prototyping. Our next prototype will focus more on the system as a whole and less on the individual screens. We will build a prototype for a single position using a real football playbook. The goal for this next stage is to accurately and effectively teach a single, complex play to a new football player.


Providing User Insights to VIT Initiative

VIT Initiative: UX Research Assignment (December 2015-January 2016)

At a small, startup career fair I met the founders of a local hardware startup, VIT Initiative. They set out to attack the massive injury problem companies face in their warehousing operations. To do so, they intended to create a wearable device workers could wear on the warehouse floor to quantify workers lifting behavior and guide them towards better lifting habits. While the founders were mostly hacking away at the technical solutions to the problem, I convinced the two founders to let me do a brief UX Research stint before they got too far in their code and manufacturing. I worked solely with a Giant Eagle warehouse near my school in Pittsburgh, PA to conduct this research.
